Possible Symposia Topics

“Male, female, and inter-sexed He created them: Exploring issues of gender and sexual expression in light of the imago Dei.”

Such a paper would seek to understand the nature of human sexuality/gender in light of the imago Dei. In particular, the paper would seek to explore the nature of the of the inter-sexed in light of the imago Dei. Questions regarding the relationship of the imago Dei and gender, the unique issues faced by the inter-sexed as it relates to sexually expressing themselves in a way that brings honor and glory to God, and whether or not one’s gender and sexual orientation can be detrimental to the imago of God being restored.

“Relational Holiness: How covenant theology helps us to navigate a course from sin to Christlikeness.”

Such a paper would seek to examine human nature from the perspective of a covenant between God and humanity. In particular, the paper would seek to examine the original nature of humanity, as expressed in the relationship between God and the first man and woman; the loss, or marring of the divine image, in light of the broken covenantal relationship; and, how, in and through the salvific work of Christ, the image of God can be restored in humanity. Moreover, the paper would seek to explore the depth of that which was lost and the heights of that which is restored.

These are just two possible topics that have come to mind. Each is imperfect and needs considerable revising. I would be interested in hearing your thoughts about either of these topics, or about other topics (related to human nature) which might make for a good presentation at a doctrinal symposium.

Doctrinal Symposia

The Wesleyan Church will be hosting the 2010 Doctrinal Symposia in the latter half of the coming year. This year’s topic is slated to be ‘Wesleyan Perspectives on Human Nature: Perfect, Flawed, and Redeemed.’. Furthermore, the question is asked, ‘Viewed from the perspective of creation, carnality, and consecration, what was human nature intended to be, what happened to this ideal, and can people be transformed- spiritually, psychologically, sexually and socially?’

I am seriously considering the possibility of putting together a proposal for an paper and accompanying address to the Symposium. However, before putting together and submitting a proposal, I would like to hear from you about what subject(s) relating to the Symposium topic should be addressed. So there you have it- now share your thoughts!
