Book Review: “Fearless”

Max Lucado’s most recent book, Fearless, is about the fear that we all experience and how we can victoriously overcome our fear. The main premise of the book seems to be that each and every one of us deals with fear. It may be a fear which manifests itself in a phobia such as agoraphobia, which paralyzes us in a noticeable way. It may be a fear that exists beneath the surface, yet it paralyzes us and causes us not to act. Each of us have fear and if it is not surrendered to God, it can (and often will) keep us from doing what God has called us to do.

Admittedly, I’ve never been a Max Lucado fan. Having admitted that, I can honestly say that this wouldn’t be a book that I would have readily purchased. In fact, had I not agreed to review it, I would probably not have taken the time to read it. However, this was by far the best Lucado book that I have read. The subject of fear is difficult to tackle. It is difficult because it is universal, in that we all deal with it, yet the degree to which we are paralyzed by it varies from person to person. Given the complexity of the topic, I thought that Lucado did an incredible job of addressing the issue, its source, and what needs to take place for us (especially as Christians) to not be held captive by our fears. What is more, Max Lucado does this in a way that is both understandable and extremely practical.

This book is well worth the time.

Video Review: “Skeeter and the Mystery of the Lost Mosquito Treasure”

The other day, I received a DVD, Skeeter and the Mystery of the Lost Mosquito Treasure, to watch and review. This is just one, in a series, of movies put out by Max Lucado and friends. Admittedly, this movie isn’t something that I would have picked up a few years ago. But now that I have a child, I find my viewing habits changing, out of necessity. Desiring to spend some time with my son, and hoping to do something that he would enjoy, I popped this DVD in and sank back on the couch. What follows are my impressions and thoughts regarding this DVD.

As I sat down to watch this DVD, I did so with some pretty basic expectations. I was hoping that the animation would be on par with other animated features that have been recently released. Additionally, I was expecting that the movie would be entertaining, hold the attention of my son, and be worth the purchase price.

Reclining on the sofa, with my son, we watched the DVD. The story was okay. It wasn’t great, nor was it particularly riveting. Even with the feature being on the shorter side, both my wife and I were rather eager for the end to come. Even my son was unable to really connect with the film. He sat still, watching the story unfold, for the first five minutes; but then proceeded to play with his toys, seeminglyunconcerned at what was going on with Skeeter and the other characters.

Moreover, the animation (especially when compared with some recent animated films that have been released) was mediocre at best. The animation was not bad, but it was not great. Older children, teens, and adults who have seen WALL-E, or something of the sort, will be disappointed by the quality of the animation.

When it comes to price, I have to say, this is not a bargain. At $10-17, you can purchase a full-length feature film, which lasts between 1.5 and 2 hours. This DVD is a whopping 60 minutes, with bonus features included. Even with wanting the DVD to come to an end, if I had paid retail price, I would have been rather disappointed and upset with the product received for the price paid.
